Bananas Help to Lower the Risk of Stroke in Menopausal Women

A new study shows that eating bananas can reduce the risk of stroke in post-menopausal women. The researchers examined about 90 thousand post-menopausal women aged 50 to 79 years for approximately 11 years.

The researchers looked at how much potassium is consumed by participants and whether they died or had a stroke during the study. As a result, participants who regularly eat bananas, the average does not have a stroke at all. Their potassium intake averaged 2,611 mg a day.

The results of these studies are based on potassium from foods, not from supplements. A medium size banana is known to contain about 430 mg of potassium.

According to the study, women who ate the banana known 12 percent less likely to suffer a stroke in general, and 16 percent less likely to have an ischemic stroke (blood flow to the brain is cut off) compared with women who rarely eat bananas.

Among women who did not have high blood pressure, those who consumed bananas are 27 percent less likely to be affected by ischemic stroke and 21 percent decreased the risk of all types of stroke.

For women who have hypertension, those who eat bananas are known to have a lower risk of death. However, the potassium intake did not lower their risk of stroke.

Sylvia Wassertheil-smoller, the study authors say that the findings of this study indicate that women need to consume more foods that are high in potassium. You could not find potassium in junk food. Some foods rich in potassium can be found in white and sweet potatoes, white beans, and bananas. But she also warned that the excess potassium also could harm the heart, and therefore consume foods with potassium in a reasonable and not excessive.
