A recent study revealed another great benefit of broccoli and cauliflower. Not only healthy for the body, but these two types of vegetables also contain an effective compound against melanoma or known as skin cancer.

The natural compound is called isothiocyanates, scientists call it. In a study published in the European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, scientists noticed that a drug containing the compound could inhibit the growth of melanoma cells.

The study was conducted on human melanoma cells as well as mice. Although the results of two types of melanoma cells are different, its effectiveness in fighting skin cancer cells are equally good.

In mice, drugs containing isothiocyanates can inhibit up to 69 percent cancer growth. While in humans, nearly 90 percent able to kill cancer cells.

Another advantage is that natural medicine does not harm other healthy cells. It is also easily detoxified from the body.

Researchers suspect that isothiocyanates work inhibiting the process of division and the growth of cancer cells.

However, scientists do not want to explicitly mention that eating broccoli and cauliflower alone is enough to prevent skin cancer.

“But there is hope that broccoli and cauliflower can lower a person’s risk of skin cancer,” said Arun Sharma, Ph.D.

In addition, the benefits of vegetable consumption are not only to prevent skin cancer alone, but still many other benefits are stored for health.
