Blueberry is Very Good for Brain and Memory Health
Want to have strong memory and brain that stay healthy until old? Just try to eat blueberries. The fruit is blue as the color and includes the type of berry. Its superiority in improving brain function, especially for the elderly has been demonstrated in a study conducted by the University of Exeter.
The study involved a group of elderly people aged between 65-77 years who are given a glass of blueberry juice every day. Impacts seen are improved cognitive function, blood flow more smoothly to the brain, and significant activation occurs in the brain when tested cognitive.
“Our cognitive function tends to decline with age,” explains Dr. Joanna Bowtell, head of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter.
According to her, to keep the cognitive function that is decreased then must consume a diet rich in vegetable or plant foods.
A study involving 26 elderly people, 12 people consumed 1 glass of blueberry juice weighing 230 grams, per day. While the remaining 14 others only given a placebo.
Cognitive tests performed before and after, show an increase in brain function and blood flow in those who drink blueberry juice.
“Only 12 weeks of consuming 30ml of concentrated blueberry juice every day, cerebral blood flow, brain activation and some aspects of working memory increase in the elderly,” she said.
The presence of high flavonoid content, as well as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory in blueberry, claimed to be the key to such high benefits.
Quoted from the Science Daily page, the study also mentioned that the risk of dementia is reduced by regular drinking blueberry fruit juice and other vegetables and fruits.
