It turns out, chocolate can be used as an effective cough medicine. Researchers from the U.S. National Institute of Cardiology, Pulmonology, and Hematology found, there is the content of dark chocolate that serves as a cough remedy, namely theobromine. And, patients who have a cough, enough to eat a chocolate bar or directly from the cocoa bean.
As quoted from Genius Beauty, the study involved 300 people who were experiencing cough. They have a status between chronic and acute pain. To them, the researchers provide a dietary supplement that contains theobromine. Each dose contains approximately 1,000 milligrams of theobromine. This value is equivalent to the amount of theobromine in dark chocolate bar. Supplementation is done twice a day for two weeks.
The result, as many as 60 percents of respondents experienced a significant reduction in a cough. The symptoms that appear reduced, compared to when a cough is acute or chronic. Researchers said, the fact that theobromine has an effect on the specific sensory effect, which is then able to reduce the severity of a cough.
It’s just not recommended to treat a cough using milk chocolate. Content on this chocolate has more milk than cocoa. Milk chocolate has less theobromine content. Better choose dark chocolate, which has a cocoa content more dominant in the mixture.
